Pong: The Environmental Case That Has Your Health In Mind

Pong has been a case we’ve been looking at, especially lately with the studies and the word SAR coming up. We were able to do a phone conferencing call with Kevin Pessarillo from the Pong Research Corporation and find out more about the company, the cases, and learn some more about this interesting case.

First of, I’d like to take the time to explain what Pong is. Pong is a company that is health, safety, and wellness minded. Their main focus is to protect unnecessary exposure to electromagnetic radiation, or EMR. Pong’s first product, the Pong Cell Phone case, represents the first patented technology that is proven in laboratories that are certified by the Federal Communications Commission, to redirect the cell phone EMR at a rate of 60 to 95% as measured by the Specific Absorption Rate, better known as SAR, away from the consumer. Interestingly enough, it also protects the phone’s signal rate as well, which you would think would be affected, but it’s not.

I’ll go into the interview first and reveal some of the content we discussed prior to showing you some hard facts and numbers along with the studies, some food for thought if you will.

The whole beauty of the case is that it will not compromise functionality. I asked how the idea of the Pong case came about and Kevin explained that the principal scientist, Dr. Alfred Wong who has a PhD from Princeton in Plasma Physics and Professor Emeritis of that same department in UCLA, was doing research and experimenting with the Aurora Borealis and how to manipulate the energy and redirect it. Using those same principals created a case effective enough to redirect the EMR. In 2009 Pong came into the Beta stage and was out 2010. The case is patented and works.

I asked about EMR and wasn’t this the same radiation that can be capable of erasing credit card strips when placed near your phone. Kevin then explained to me how a phone works and where the EMR comes into play. This is a bit technical so I’ll try to put into into the best words I can.

This is how a phone works:

Cell phone antennae emit microwave energy (a type of EMR) in the “far field” and as much moreconcentrated “near field” radio frequency (“RF”) waves, when transmitting data to cell towers. In free space, the near field would “propagate” to become the far field EMR. Yet between 48% and 68% of the near field energy of a cell phone placed next to the head cannot propagate into the far field but, rather, absorbs into the user’s head and body. In other words the energy is going into your head. What the Pong case does is safely redirect that energy away from your head and moves it to the back of the phone while preserving the quality of the cell phone signal, and in fact may increase the signal with what they do. What’s interesting is if you look at your cell phone manufacture’s instructions, they will state to keep the phone a little distance from your ear.

Kevin shared some pretty interesting information with us. We found out to make a mold, it costs around $15 to $20 grand, so the phones they choose are the most popular phones. The materials used to create the cases is really neat. They are using a newer material that uses the same material every time called Lexan which is better than silicone as it is always the same. The iPhone cases come in five colors. I also asked how well they protect the phone. They are useful in preventing full exposure to the EMR, but not for protection against fall and damage. The pong cases sell for $49.99. They aren’t bulky in any means.

The cases come in white packaging vacuum sealed. I asked if they come with screen protectors, which they don’t at this time. The user manual included is made from recycled materials. There’s a barcode to scan to take you to the user manuals online so you know it’s the authentic case and not a counterfeit.

We’ll be reviewing some of these cases and sharing our findings with you. With the media and the thoughts of the EMR and SAR, it’s always better to have a pound of prevention than a pound of cure.

OtterBox launches Reflex Series for iPhone 4 and BlackBerry Curve 8500/9300

The OtterBox Reflex Series was first introduced at the beginning of this year, but OtterBox ran into some issues with the design along the way. Well the time has come that iPhone 4 and BlackBerry Curve 85xx/93xx owners can finally get their hands on OtterBox’s latest case. This by far has to be one of the coolest cases I’ve seen designed for the iPhone 4 yet. It’s called “iPhone 4 Stacks Case” and it does exactly what it sounds like. This case is part of Case-Mate’s new Fall/Winter 2010-2011 collection, and is designed by Erik Arlen. The case features six modular pieces that stack together to built a custom case for your iPhone 4. I love my Powermat but lately it hasn’t got much use because of my new devices.
